Jack-in-the-pulpit is a distinctive spring woodland perennial recognized by its hooded green or purple‑striped “pulpit” that shelters the spadix (“Jack”). Plants grow 1–2 ft. tall and thrive in rich, moist, shady soils. Jack‑in‑the‑pulpit is unusual in that its flowers can change sex from year to year: small, energy‑limited plants typically produce male flowers, while larger, well‑established plants often produce female flowers and later clusters of bright red berries. All parts of the plant contain sharp calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if eaten raw, causing burning and irritation. It has been labeled with plenty of interesting common names of the years including dragon root, pepper turnip, lord-and-lady, and memory root.

It prefers soil rich in organic material and a fair amount of shade. Growing it from seed isn't difficult, though this plant can be slow to reach maturity. Simply tossing the red berries in a shade garden where you want them to grow can be enough to get at least a few plants established.
