White Turtlehead is a welcome addition to rain gardens, pond margins, and other sites with abundant moisture. The white flowers, shaped like turtle heads, last for about a month and can be seen as early as July and as late as October. It can spread by short rhizomes to form colonies when planted in favorable conditions: sunny areas with rich, organic soil that receives some moisture during the hot part of summer. Young shoots can be cooked and eaten, but they may be fairly bitter. Caterpillars of the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly will use the plant as a food source.
