Fremont's Leather Flower is a slow-growing but long-lived plant and is fairly uncommon. Unlike Missouri's other clematises, this one is not a vine and only grows to about a foot and a half tall. It needs plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil. Flowers are usually a shade of lavender to white. Dried plants turn gray/silver and display the intricate, lacy remains of their foliage.
