Junegrass is a cool season grass that begins growing much earlier in the spring than other grasses. It prefers sunny, well-drained sites, but is also found in savannas and limestone glades.

It is tolerant of fairly heavy foot traffic and mowing. The fibrous root system has a lateral spread of 6 to 8 inches near the ground surface and is most dense within the top few inches of soil, though the roots may grow as deep as 2 feet or so. This makes it useful for erosion control.

Growth and flowering occur April through June and then energy is focused toward forming seeds, which ripen and occur in showy spiked clusters in July and August. The plant typically turns brown shortly after its early spring growth.
