The fragrant, bright pink flowers of smooth phlox are a butterfly favorite, especially larger butterflies such as swallowtails and monarchs. Dead-heading spent flowers can prolong flowering time. Smooth phlox is one of the taller phloxes, but it isn't especially sturdy. To prevent it from sprawling sideways, plant it with some more rigid companions. Riddell's goldenrod, shining bluestar, and southern blue flag will help give support.
