The American sycamore is an impressive, fast-growing tree that can reach 100 feet tall in 30 years. It has the ability to shed old bark, which reveals the bright white new bark underneath. This results in a pleasing mosaic of white, gray, and brown patches. Mature trees are often hollow and make excellent homes and hiding places for chimney swifts, swallows, and other wildlife. Several insects use sycamores as food plants, such as the imperial moth and sycamore tussock moth.
