Sumacs have some of the most spectacular fall colors of our trees and shrubs, and fragrant sumac is no exception with shades of orange and red. In prime conditions, it can grow as tall as eight feet but is usually in the 3- to 6-foot range. Many birds eat the fruit, which ripens much earlier than our other native sumacs. The edible fruits can be prepared as a lemonade, jelly, or food spice.
