Winged sumac is prized for its gorgeous, red fall color and excellent wildlife benifits. A canopy of dark green leaves persist throughout the growing season providing food for several insect species and turn pinkish red in autumn. Though less aggressive than smooth sumac, winged sumac will need some space and likely isn't suitable for most small flower beds. This is a very drought tolerant and fire tolerant species. Deer and rabbits may eat the twigs and bark over winter, but the damage to the plant should be tolerable.
