Excellent bird seed, red fruits, and brilliant foliage are a plus. Mow around this thicket forming shrub to curb its spread. Smooth sumac works well when reclaiming heavily disturbed sites and along roadsides due to its aggressive nature and ability to withstand poor growing conditions. However, it is too aggressive and fire tolerant to plant near prairies or prairie restorations where it will displace other desirable species.
