Red elderberry is an ornamental, medium height shrub. Bright scarlet to red berries in June are eaten by at least 23 bird species. Having more than one plant for cross pollination greatly improves berry production. The sour berries shouldn't be eaten raw but, once cooked, have been used to make jellies and wines. Red elderberry can be pruned to produce a more compact plant.
