The large purple balls of flowers are fantastic late in the year. Bees love fall glade onion. Long, narrow green leaves appear in early spring, die back in early summer, and are followed by 12 - 18 inch flower stalks in fall. Plant them in sunny, dry beds among earlier-blooming species or in a bed with the other allium species to have allium flowers nearly all year long. Fall glade onion is edible and strongly flavored.

Uses: Rock gardens, edible, bees, ornamental flowers, deer tolerant

Bloom time: August & September

Height: 10 to 16 inches

Space: 3 to 6 inches

Look for ripe seed in late October. It needs a long stratification period, so be sure to sow it by January.
