Slender bushclover has clusters of small, pink flowers that are visited by various bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its roots help fix nitrogen in the soil, aiding in soil fertility. This is a great plant for wildlife, though dense populations of deer, groundhogs, or rabbits can hinder establishment as they all enjoy eating the plant. Once established, it can spread both by seed and vegetatively. Slender bushclover prefers sunny, dry conditions, but it can also grow in a fair amount of shade. It is drought tolerant and can be found in prairies, glades, upland forests, roadsides, and savannas.
Uses: Drought tolerant, bees, pollinators, soil improvement
Bloom time: May - September
Height: 24 to 36 inches
Space: 10 to 20 inches
Sun: Full sun to medium shade
Moisture: Dry to average
Seed: The hard seed coat needs to break down in order for germination to occur. Winter weather can help this process, so winter sow or cold stratify for at least 30 days. Scarification and a hot water soak is also effective in spring if you've missed out on winter sowing.
