Hairy blazing star is very similar to scaly blazing star (L. squarrosa) and is sometimes considered a variety of that species instead of being a species on its own. The plant is covered in small hairs that can give it a silvery appearance in the right light. Like other blazing stars, it attracts many pollinators. Mature plants in ideal conditions can have forty or more flower heads per stem.
