Scaly blazing star is smaller and blooms earlier than the taller blazing star species. It's flowers are fairly large, given the plant's dainty size. They attract a variety of native pollinators, including bees, butterflies, skippers, and hummingbirds. Birds consume the seeds and hunt the insects and spiders that visit the plant. It grows in bright, sunny areas with thin, rocky soil. Habitats include glades, prairies, savannas, and woodland borders and openings. Blazing stars will not survive in areas with dense populations of deer.
