Touching the leaflets causes them fold together, and this is why it is called sensitive briar. Showy, pink, pompom-like flowers are visited by bees. The low, sprawling stems can be four feet long and are covered in curved prickles. A synonym is Mimosa quadrivalvis.

Bloom time: May - September

Height: 10 to 20 inches

Space: 30 to 40 inches

Sunlight: Full sun to light shade

Moisture: Dry to average

Seed: Has a hard seed coat that can be worn down over time as the seed undergoes exposure to changing temperatures and weather. Germination can be induced by scarification and a brief stratification period. Scarify with sandpaper or briefly pulse the seed (up to 1/2 cup at a time) in a blender. After scarification, either stratify for at least 10-20 days in a moist medium or pour hot water over the seeds and let them soak in it overnight before sowing.
