Softstem bulrush grows in wet soil or in up to 3 feet of standing water. Its creeping rhizomes are capable of forming dense colonies of plants that serve as cover for fish and other aquatic wildlife. Waterfowl may find these colonies suitable for nesting habitat, and they'll consume the nutritious seedheads.
