Downy goldenrod, or woodland goldenrod, grows well in rocky soil with good drainage and partial sunlight. It is well-suited for wildflower gardens where it will bloom a little earlier than most goldenrod species. There are records of it blooming as early as May and as late as November. The large flowerheads will attract numerous pollinators. If planting in rich, organic soil, it may need to be cut back heavily early in the year to prevent it from getting too leggy. Otherwise, planting it at the back or center of a bed (with or without staking) will help it perform well in a more formal setting.

Bloom time: August - September

Space: 12 to 16 inches
