The leaves have a rough, sandpaper-like texture that gives the plant its common name. Western rough goldenrod is shorter than many other goldenrods. It grows in dry, rocky places and open woods or savannas. Like other goldenrods, this one is a great plant for pollinators later in the year, though it is known to be one of the earliest to flower and can begin blooming as early as May.
