Nannyberry has fragrant clusters of white flowers in May and June. It is very shade tolerant, but plants grown in bright, open areas tend to be more robust. It is typically a suckering shrub that forms small thickets, though it can be grown as a small tree to about 20 feet tall.
The flowers attract a number of bees and other small insects. Small edible fruits are enjoyed by birds and other creatures. Fall color is typically a dull or deep purple. Large shrubs like nannyberry are good nesting sites for birds and provide good habitat for wildlife in general.
