This is a non-suckering plum that is typically a single-stemmed small tree rather than a shrub. The fragrant white flowers are important to many pollinating insects and the sweet fruits are eaten by many kinds of wildlife. The plums are ripe when they have turned from red to grayish-blue; red plums are not ripe and will be more bitter than sweet.
