Heartleaf skullcap grows well in dappled shade and rocky soil that doesn't stay too wet, but it can handle a range of growing conditions. It spreads both by seed and rhizome and, after a few years, it will have noticeably moved around in the flowerbed. Many woodland wildflowers bloom in the spring before tree foliage creates heavy shade, but heartleaf skullcap blooms later, adding summer interest to shady gardens. Spigelia marilandica would make a great companion.
Bumblebees are frequent visitors along with butterflies, moths, and the occasional hummingbird. Deer and rabbits are unlikely to eat this plant.
