Also known as Andropogon elliotii, Elliott's bluestem has showy seed heads and turns a beautiful copper/orange shade in autumn. The fall color fades to yellow-brown and adds some charm to the winter landscape. It normally grows in dry, sunny sites, but can take a little shade and a fair amount of moisture. Like other grasses, Elliott's bluestem is valuable to wildlife. It attracts a number of insects that either feed on the plant or take refuge in the foliage. Birds visit to eat the insects and seeds and for cover.
